The artist Laura Reader

Many people have asked me why the name the Laura Henry Collection? Well in my earliest years I was inspired as an artist by draftsmen and watercolour artist Bruce Reader, my father and Laurence Henry Reader, my grandfather who was also an artist. I never met my grandfather Laurence as he died just 1 month before I was born but his beautiful art lived on, not just in the few paintings that remained in our family but through my father and through me. When I created the collection I wanted to honour his memory and his skill and so I adopted his middle name for the collection. It fits just right.

When I was a young artist I had often found myself quite uninspired by watercolours, often just using the paint straight from the tube. I could never create the vivid colours I was looking to achieve. I decided to experiment with acrylics and I quickly found that they worked well with the artwork I was trying to achieve.

But it wasn't until many years later that I decided to return to my artwork. I've have led a successful career in web design and graphics and have worked throughout London and the West Midlands. I always felt that you could never earn a real living from painting and I didn't want my passion to become a chore. Many people may say my art is too cheap, or it is too expensive. For me I just want to sell to people who love my artwork for what it is. The vivid structure of colour captivating the viewer, the vibrancy of life that can fill a room just from a painting. For me that is the achievement.

As I grew as an artist, I took aspects of Salvador Dali's work into my own as well as being inspired by the form and structure of Michelangelo's work. Having a great love for people, travel and foreign culture I have travelled throughout Asia, Europe and the rest of the world, which has often inspired and influenced me within my work.

Since 2004 I have exhibited locally in Shropshire and in London as well as online through ZeroOneArt, Agora Gallery in New York and the Saatchi Gallery with many unique paintings being sold. I was also a finalist at the Liberté d´Expression contemporary underground world of art exhibition in 2006 in association with Barclays and the NSPCC.

I hope that whoever finds my art for the first time will remember that even Van Gogh was unknown once and would sell his art just for food... it doesn't matter what the price is, it's how it makes you feel.
